Veterans Affairs Department Fires Leaders

The Department of Veteran Affairs fired three senior leaders connected to the patient-wait time controversy at the Phoenix VA Health Care System: Lance Robinson, associate director; Brad Curry, chief of health administration service; and Darren Deering, chief of staff.

The three were dismissed for “negligent performance of duties and failure to provide effective overnight for not ensuring veterans were either properly scheduled for appointments or placed on an appropriate wait list,” according to VA officials.

The controversy started in 2014 over a report from the VA inspector general that showed 1,700 veterans were at risk of not being placed on the hospital’s waiting list and veterans waited approximately 115 days for their first appointment at the Phoenix location.
